Historic Homes, Hotels & Decals for Plates
On this month’s call I shared a little bit about the book tour events I had in California last month. I also shared photos and video of design inspiration from that trip.
In particular, we discussed hotels and historic homes.
One of the hotels I stayed in and shared photos of during our call used vintage plates and platters for directional signs:
This is an easy DIY project if you’d like to do something simliar!
What you’re looking for is called “waterslide transfer” paper. Or you can google “transfer paper for ceramics.”
There are different kinds. If you want the ceramics to be food safe, you need access to a kiln! If your purposes are just decorative, you can use paper that uses either water only or a water & oven combo.
I’ve found some that comes with imagery and some that’s just the paper and you cut out your own images for application.

I did this project many years ago and I used images from vintage magazines. Another cool source would be papers from Cavallini. You may have seen their gift wrap sheets in a shop near you.
