Design Rules of Thumb

These rules will generally be useful and applicable. But please don’t think they are set in stone! Rules are meant to be broken. But only once you understand what they are and why you’re breaking them!

Step 4: Functional Design Rules

In this video, I go over 4 design rules that have to do with how a room functions. They are:

  • Rug size

  • Number of lights

  • Furniture placement

  • Visual Weight

Step 5: Aesthetic Design Rules

The aesthetic rules I cover are related to:

  • Focal point

  • Color flow

  • Hanging your artwork

  • The mix of styles & materials

Step 6: Start Layering with Side Tables & Lighting

This is an excerpt from a longer video about adding final layers to your room (such as throws, pillows, plants, books, etc). For now, you’re not working on those things but questions about side tables and lighting might come up, so I thought this video may be helpful at this point in your room makeover. Please note: you may not decide to start adding side tables and/or lighting before the other layers I cover next. It’ll be up to you when you add each layer, depending on what you already own and love, what you can use as placeholder or what you already know you want to buy.
